Activities Around Kirkcudbright

Located in Dumfries and Galloway, the lovely seaside town of Kirkcudbright is ideally located to explore the beautiful coastline, rolling countryside and the all the activities that the area has to offer. Here are just a few ideas together with some useful links to help you along the way when planning your visit.

Galleries

Kirkcudbright is well known as a destination for artists and developed an artists colony in the 1800's that included well known names such as E A Hornel, William Mouncey, William Stewart MacGeorge, Charles Oppenheimer, Jessie M King, E A Taylor and S J Peploe.

Kirkcudbright still remains a draw for artists and photographers with a wealth of material to be found by the water or in the hills. The view from Ard Na Still, looking about across the estuary towards Kirkcudbright, is a well photographed and painted scene.

There are some lovely galleries to visit including Kirkcudbright Galleries and Harbour Cottage Galleries to name just a couple.

Cycling

From Ard Na Still there are some easy cycle routes if you are looking for something on the door step. Yet venture onto National Cycle Route 7 from Kirkcudbright and you have the choice of lovely towns such as Wigtown or Castle Douglas or the wonderful countryside of the Galloway Forest to explore. Further to the west is National Route 73, which joins Route 7 at Newton Stewart, and heads west to Stranraer.

Golf

South West Coast 300

If you are wanting to explore Dumfries and Galloway by road then the SWC 300 is something that should be on your itinerary. Taking you along coast and through fells it will give you a memorable trip through our lovely area. More information, includiing a map, can be found at Visit South West Scotland.

There is also the Burns Country Run which is a 162 mile route and takes you along notable local landmarks associated with the famous Scottish poet, Robert Burns.

Fishing

Whether it is trout or salmon, throughout Dumfries and Galloway we are very lucky to have some lovely rivers (including the River Dee, Bladnoch, Cree) and lochs. Being located on the coast there are opportunities for sea fishing and the Solway Firth Partnership is a useful website for more information.

Places to visit

There are plenty of places to visit in Dumfries and Galloway but here are just a few to help you on your way.

For book fans then Wigtown is a must and this small town in SW Scotland has been designated Scotland's Book Town. At the end of September through to the beginning of October there is the annual Wigtown Book Festival where you will be able to listen to visiting authors, visit exhibitions and browse through all the wonderful book shops.

Threave Castle, located outside Castle Douglas, is a 14th century fortress of Archibald 'the Grim'. Set on an island it is reached by boat and is a lovely destination for a day trip and is particularly popular with artists and photographers.

Walking

Whether it is walking along the coastline or across rolling countryside there will be something for anyone who wishes to walk in Dumfries and Galloway. There are a number of website but a couple of useful ones are Walkhighlands and Dumfries & Galloway on line. Some guides for walking in Galloway Forest, which is the largest Forest Park in Britain with over 300 square miles of outstanding natural beauty, can be found on the Forestry Scotland website.
